The programme "Literacy about mood disorders and ways of coping with mental health problems" continues and expands upon the innovative "With raised mental health literacy to better managing of mood disorders" programme. It is founded on the concept of mental health literacy, which encompasses cognitive and social skills, as well as an individual's motivation to access, understand, and critically use information to promote and maintain good mental health. This approach enables a more comprehensive understanding of mental health, as it includes knowledge for managing risk factors, strengthening protective factors, earlier recognition of problems, reducing (self-)stigma, and forming more realistic expectations about the course and effects of treatment.
To provide knowledge that takes into account the broader social context of health and disease, the activities of the OMRA 4 programme are multidisciplinary. Alongside experts from the Sociomedical Institute of the ZRC SAZU, experts from the Institute Karakter and Pamina Maribor also participate in its implementation. The diverse team – including psychiatrists, psychotherapists, anthropologists, psychologists, social workers, sociologists, and philosophers – brings many years of experience in mental health promotion and aims to raise awareness of mental health issues and encourage the general public to seek professional help.
The main objective of the OMRA 4 programme is to increase literacy about mental disorders, as numerous data show that the population of Slovenia still has a relatively poor understanding of them. Experts warn that the incidence of mental disorders will grow faster in the future than that of most other disease groups. Despite significant efforts in this area, high-quality programmes for strengthening mental health, preventing and early detection of problems, and their treatment, including various forms of intervention, are unfortunately still not equally accessible to all residents and in all regions of Slovenia. The OMRA 4 programme is therefore aimed at increasing access to reliable information on the early recognition of mental health problems and the available forms of (self-)help. It will achieve this through direct educational activities and support for an online educational platform, thereby contributing to raising the level of mental health literacy among diverse population groups in Slovenia.
